A Broadmeadows TAFE teacher who works with migrants and refugee has been shortlisted for a national award.
Kangan Institute teacher Susan Shaw is in the running to win the Excellence in Language, Literacy and Numeracy Practice Award at the 2022 Australian Training Awards.
Ms Shaw teaches English as a second language and joined Kangan in 2012.
She also co-ordinates, and oversees online English courses at the TAFE and is part of a new national pronunciation taskforce program which is developing best practice techniques for teaching pronunciation.
During her time at Kangan and particularly during the pandemic, Ms Shaw has developed a passion for online resources, including adding writing and grammar courses for workers wanting to improve their written communication.
“Traditional classrooms always have an important place in language and literacy, but I believe online learning is a way to level the playing field for all learners, making information and education accessible to all,” she said.
Ms Shaw also started dedicated youth classes after recognising that cultural attitudes sometimes made young people very reserved around older students, has completed a mental health first aid course to support students with traumatic backgrounds and initiated a popular end-of-year celebration involving teaches and students.
Award winners will be announced on November 18.
