The sport oval at Mill Park’s Redleap Recreation Reserve will get a $2 million upgrade if the Liberals and Nationals win the November 26 state election.
Liberal candidate for Mill Park Paige Yap made the election promise last week, saying the upgrade would include a new cricket pitch, irrigation system, lighting and coach boxes.
The funding commitment has been welcomed by Whittlesea council.
Council’s chair administrator Lydia Wilson said this announcement would support Mill Park’s sporting community.
“Redleap Recreation Reserve is a popular place for our community and additional funding would support our residents to continue to enjoy playing the sports they love with upgraded facilities,” she said.
“Council continues to advocate to all levels of government for the delivery of projects that increase health and social benefits for our community, and this is a great example of how we can partner together to ensure we support our community to participate in sport.”
The reserve is an 8.3 hectare site that contains a football/cricket oval, sports pavilion, two playgrounds, basketball stadium, lake, walking tracks, car parking and public toilets and is home to the Mill Park Football Club and Mill Park Cricket Club.
Whittlesea council has developed a master plan for the reserve to guide long and short-term improvements.
Council recently renovated the cricket nets at Redleap Recreational Reserve and the playground to the east of the oval is currently being redeveloped thanks to grant funding.
