Successful jobs event helps address the skills shortage

The City of Whittlesea in partnership with Social Outcome Solutions (SOS) held a successful Social Procurement and Inclusive Jobs Event in August.

The aim was to make 50 job opportunities available for local City of Whittlesea residents who might otherwise find job seeking challenging, such as young people, people with disability, First Nations or culturally and linguistically diverse people.

The event attracted 300 registrations, more than 100 job seekers and 15 local employers, contractors and social benefit suppliers, who were able to fill over 40 jobs on the day as a result.

“We were absolutely inundated with applications and instantly employed three new staff,” said Iliana Dimitriadis, Head of People and Culture at Aqua Metro, one of the employers.

The event was in line with City of Whittlesea’s Strong Local Economy Strategy, which outlines the Council’s vision for its economic future – prioritising local jobs, promoting education opportunities and allowing local businesses to innovate and grow.

City of Whittlesea CEO Craig Lloyd said council plays an important role in supporting local jobs.

“The event provides an example of Council’s role in supporting the delivery of local jobs for local people and tackles the economic participation challenges for businesses to fill critical job vacancies,“ Mr Lloyd said.
