Respite centre hits construction milestone

The $2.7 million Mernda Social Support Centre is inching closer to completion, with the care facility recently reaching a construction milestone.

The building’s steel frame and roof have been installed, marking a significant stage in the construction of the much-anticipated support centre.

Once complete, eligible residents will be able to access respite day support to help reduce social isolation by providing people that are frail, living with disability, memory loss (dementia), have limited mobility, and are 65 years and over, the opportunity to try new activities, establish links in the community and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

The Mernda Social Support Centre is under construction next to Mernda Village Community Activity Centre on Mernda Village Drive and will include three activity rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, outdoor area, consulting and quiet rooms, and a Changing Places facility which will also include an unisex public toilet.

The centre also features an environmentally sustainable design, including solar panels and a water tank to re-use rainwater.

The project is jointly funded by the Whittlesea council and the Victorian government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

The facility is expected to open late 2022 or early 2023.
