Bridge strengthening works for Melbourne’s north

The state government is replacing and strengthening eleven bridges and culverts along some of Melbourne’s routes, including those in the north to provide safe traffic access.

The bridges to be upgraded include Barry Road over Craigieburn rail line near Coolaroo, Donnybrook Road near Donnybrook, Plenty Road over Mernda Drain at Mernda, Whittlesea-Yea Road near Whittlesea and, Wallan Road over Scrubby Creek near Whittlesea.

Construction of a new culvert bridge on Donnybrook Road near Doreen will also begin, to ensure accessibility in the rapidly growing northern suburbs of Melbourne.

When complete, the structure will include new safety barriers and line marking to improve safety.

Transport infrastructure minister Jacinta Allan said the bridge works would help contribute to bettering the industry and improving safety.

“We’re strengthening bridges across the state to ensure safer journeys for years to come, while supporting local industries by improving efficiency and reducing supply chain costs.”

“The upgrades will ensure some of Victoria’s key transport routes across the outer and inner suburbs are safer and more reliable, for all road users.”

The Structures Rehabilitation Package for the north and southeast is expected to be completed by 2023.
