My Place

Iconic Broadmeadows auctioneer, Martin Evans chats to Helena Abdou about his unique work in Melbourne’s north.

What is your connection to the north?

I’ve got a warehouse in Broadmeadows and I auction off stuff of deceased estates, anything leftover from our farm clearance sales, cars and collectibles so that’s what ties me to the area.

How did you get into auctioneering?

I started about 30 years ago with another auctioneer in Kyneton and that’s where I live as well. I started with a fella and I used to sell hotdogs at the auction. I became a friend of the auctioneer and I ended up working for him and then ended up taking over his business.

What’s the most bizarre thing you’ve auctioned off?

I’ve auctioned off a stuffed penguin, I sold off some fella’s wooden leg from the First World War which was something different.

What do you love most about Broadmeadows?

I love the different people in the town and I get to meet a variety of people in my line of work.
