Westmeadows women’s dominance of T20 cricket has continued with the Warriors’ first XI winning their third straight premiership.
The Warriors faced Caroline Springs in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s grand final on Sunday.
The Warriors looked in control several times throughout the game, but the Falcons wouldn’t give up and took the game deep.
It was only when Ashlee Adams hit multiple boundaries late, that the Warriors could celebrate.
Warriors captain Caetlyn Twentyman said it was an amazing game.
“It’s been a long year and we’ve come a long way since round one,” she said. “We started against Caroline Springs and ended against Caroline Springs, which was really good.
“We were lucky, we lost a couple of wickets in the middle there quite quickly and it got quite nervous, needing 20 odd off five overs.
“Then Ash came in and hit fours and sixes like you wouldn’t believe, it was amazing.”
The Falcons batted first and it was slow going early on. Caitlin Pretty would get the innings going making 35.
The Falcons would finish 4-85. Natalie Linton was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-12.
The Warriors started well with the bat and looked to be on track to chase down the runs. The loss of a couple of quick wickets turned things, with both sides still in the game heading into the final five overs.
Adams came in and got the job done, with the Warriors finishing 5-86. They made the runs with 14 balls remaining.
Linton and Emily Findlay made 17 apiece at the top of the order. Adams finished 14 not out
Pretty was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-9.
Pretty was named player of the match by the umpires.
The premiership is the Warriors third in a row, with the side making a grand final in all five seasons since forming.
Twentyman said this season the side was a different one to the one from the last couple of seasons.
“It was a really tough season,” she said.
“We are a new team, a lot of the girls are first time players.
“It was tough to get to know everyone. Once we found our groove after the first couple of rounds, we decided that we can do this, that we can probably take that all the way and today that’s what we did.”
“It’s a fantastic record and the girls should be more than proud of themselves.”
