Education Minister James Merlino visited Greenvale Secondary College on Wednesday to officially open the school.

Principal Mark Natoli, students and Yuroke MP Ros Spence were on hand to welcome Mr Merlino to the school, which marked its first day on Tuesday.

As reported by Star Weekly, the Greenvale community has been waiting more than 26 years for the school to be built.

The school is only taking year 7 students this year, with 119 enrolled. It will eventually be able to cater for up to 1100 students.

Mr Merlino said the first stage of the school includes a science, technology, engineering and maths building, a learning neighbourhood building, an administration and learning resource centre building, and landscaped outdoor play and learning areas.

Future stages will include a dedicated visual arts building, and a performing arts and physical education building including an indoor multi-court and a sports oval.

“It’s fantastic to see this world-class new school up and running in Greenvale – and as we deliver future stages, it will just go from strength to strength in providing everything to suit the talents and passions of every student,” Mr Melino said.

“The Greenvale Secondary community has a blank slate with their school – I can’t wait to see not just their academic successes, but the positive and supportive school culture they build in the coming years.”

Ms Spence said: “I know the Greenvale community has been waiting a long time for this school to get off the ground, so this is a really special day – finally our local families don’t have to travel far to get a fantastic public education”.
