A ‘Watch and Act’ alert has been issued for greater Melbourne, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warning that “severe thunderstorms” have been detected near Craigieburn.
The alert also says “very dangerous thunderstorms” were detected on the weather radar near Gisborne and Woodend.
These storms are moving through the north of Melbourne towards the south to southeast.
“The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 7.05 am, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Craigieburn, Footscray, Greensborough, Melton, Preston, St Albans and Sunbury,” the BOM statement said.
“A very humid, unstable airmass will support continued thunderstorm activity through parts of the state. An upper trough will continue to support thunderstorms during today.”
BOM said the storms are causing intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding.
“Prepare to take shelter and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather. Hazards include floodwater, debris, damaged building, trees down, fallen power lines,” the alert said.
The bureau has advised people to park their car undercover away from trees, stay inside if conditions outside appear dangerous, and contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, if safe to do so.
If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low lying areas, creeks, canals, culverts and floodwater.
Be aware of road hazards such as mud, debris and damaged roads or bridges, the bureau said.
