Ziebell’s Farmhouse Museum and Heritage Garden have been awarded the Heritage and Culture Community Award at the 2021 Sustainable Cities Awards.

The museum in Thomastown was recognised for its Turning Back to Edgars Creek exhibition, which was initially a postal exhibition for the Thomastown and Lalor communities and is now a physical one.

Museum director Gordon Johnston said it was “nothing short of brilliant” to be recognised for the award.

He said it supported the belief that Edgars Creek has a “very interesting” history.

“We wanted to highlight the significant and interesting history of Edgars Creek and its importance as open space in the future,” Mr Johnston said.

“A museum comes alive when it engages with its communities and the award, for us, shows we are doing something right.”

Mr Johnston said he hoped the Thomastown and Lalor communities were proud of the award as well.

He said the exhibition tried to show people history they hadn’t seen before and do something new.

“Museums no longer talk about objects and history,” Mr Johnston said.

“They need to be relevant to their communities and we hope this exhibition is just that.

“That makes it special and interesting.”
