Whittlesea seniors can boost their online connectivity thanks to a series of free digital literacy classes.

In a partnership with Whittlesea U3A, Whittlesea council will run classes for over-55s, teaching participants how to use their Android or Apple phones, laptops, computers or tablets, and get connected online.

Chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the COVID-19 pandemic meant that more people than ever were having to rely on technology and a device to connect with others.

“Using a device for the first time can be scary and almost a new world of social connection, and it can be a steep learning curve when you’ve never done it before,” Ms Wilson said.

“The feeling of virtually connecting to a friend or family member is a huge achievement, and the digital literacy program will teach seniors all they need to know about getting online and becoming tech-savvy and more confident.

“Whittlesea U3A do terrific work supporting our senior community with a host of leisure, educational and creative activities, and these classes will teach so many relevant skills which will leave a lasting impact on our seniors.”

Topics covered will include; social media management and online safety; MyGov setup, including adding a COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate; email setup; video calling; applications; internet connectivity; and data management.

The classes are held over Zoom and run every Tuesday from 2.30pm to 4pm, and are limited to 15 participants.

From early next year, the classes will be run in person in Lalor, Whittlesea, Mernda and Mill Park.
