Tullamarine’s premiership hopes have received a boost with the signing of former AFL player Shaun McKernan for the 2022 season.

The Essendon District Football League division 1 club announced over the weekend that McKernan, who had played juniors at the club, was returning having finished up his AFL career.

The ruck-forward played 91 games across 13 years in the AFL across three clubs. He was most recently at St Kilda this year.

In a Facebook post, Tullamarine said it was proud to announce the signing of McKernan.

“Shaun joins the club not only as a player, but will help mentor our younger brigade in the role of assistant coach-forward line [coach] working under DC [David Connell] and Chappy [Ben Chapman],” the post said.

“Shaun is a former Tullamarine junior, who was coached by our now president Peter Labbad in the under-16s back in 2006-2007.

“Even though he has been away from the football club for many years he has remained very close friends with Peter and players from those years some of which are still at the football club now.

“Outside of Shaun’s football ability, he fits our club’s core values to a tee. He is a very humble individual who has always come back to the club to help out with junior clinics-Auskick whenever he could.”

The post said McKernan had a desire to help the club be great again and push into premier division.
