Shoppers panic-buying toilet paper have forced Coles and Woolworths to reintroduce purchase limits.

Both supermarkes this morning announced that they had introduced a temporary two-pack per person limit on toilet paper in all Victorian stores.

“We have plenty of stock in our supply chain, and this temporary measure will help us to manage demand so that we can return our stores to a fully-stocked position as quickly as possible,” a Coles statement said,

“We ask that customers stay calm, shop normally and be respectful to our hard-working team members.”

Woolworths state manager Andrew Hall told radio station 3AW that the supermarket had reinstated a two-pack per person limit after demand for toilet paper had grown by 300 per cent in the past 24 hours.

“What we did see was people take the opportunity to buy toilet rolls where they are there,” he said.

“There is plenty of stock in the system.”

In a social media statement, Woolworths said it was reinstating the limit to ensure customers had “fair access” to toilet paper.

“We have plenty of stock and our teams are working hard to replenish our shelves,” the statement said.

“We thank customers for their patience as we do this. We will remain open throughout the lockdown.”

The buying limit follows reports of increased sales of toilet paper at supermarkets since Wednesday.
