Streetscape upgrades are helping to breathe new life into some of Whittlesea’s most popular shopping precincts, according to council and local businesses.
Whittlesea council is refreshing the streetscapes in David Street and May Road in Lalor and in Thomastown between Highlands and Pleasant roads in a bid to transform the streets into inviting and active community spaces.
David Street and May Road are being modernised with new paving, safer walkways, updated road access for improved traffic flow and new landscaping.
Pedestrian crossings, new paving, seats, bike racks and bins are being installed between Highlands and Pleasant roads, along with and a public space at the war memorial site opposite Thomastown Primary School.
Council hopes the works will encourage residents to shop locally.
“After a tough year for businesses, it’s never been more important to support our hard-working local traders by improving the vitality of our shopping precincts,” chair administrator Lydia Wilson said.
“Our streetscape works are creating open, inviting and safe spaces that make shopping local easier and more enjoyable.”
Paul Tsardakis, owner of Lalor Party Supplies, has seen the area evolve in his 48 years at Lalor Shopping Centre.
“What I love most about this strip is its great culture. It’s become a gathering place for friends, enjoying the cafés, food and shops together,” said Mr Tsardakis.
“The upgrades from council are really appreciated. It’s fantastic to see the street looking fresh and inviting for years to come.”
The streetscape upgrades are being delivered with the help of the state and federal governments.
