The speed limit will be lowered along a section of Plenty Road at Bundoora as part of a six-month safety trial by VicRoads.

The limit will be dropped from 80km/h to 70km/h between Greenhills and McKimmies roads until July.

According to VicRoads, road movements are complicated on this section of Plenty Road, with multiple lights and entry and exit points, as well as schools and universities and a tram line in the middle of the road.

As reported by Star Weekly, Plenty Road topped insurer AAMI’s crash index for the third year in a row in November last year.

According to AAMI’s data, the most dangerous time for crashes on Plenty Road is on Thursday between 1.30pm and 4.30pm, with nose to tail collisions the most common.

“The AAMI safety survey reinforced that Plenty Road in Bundoora is a crash hotspot,” a VicRoads statement said.

“Road safety is a responsibility that we share with the community – everyone has a role to play. We’re continuing to make sure our road infrastructure is safe, and we call on drivers to play their part by avoiding distraction and keeping safe distances.

“This change will improve safety for the schools, businesses and residents who live nearby, reducing the risk and severity of crashes for all road users.”

The trail began on January 27, with VicRoads installing new speed signs along the road ahead of the trial’s commencement.

A new 40km/h school speed zone has also been created outside Parade College.

VicRoads said it will consult with residents during the trial to better understand community views and improve safety for all road users.
