State election: Labor set to win Yan Yean, Thomastown, Broadmeadows

The result for the electorate of Yan Yean will not be finalised until Monday when informal votes are to be counted.

Just after 10pm on Satuday, 57 per cent of votes were counted and incumbent Labor MP Danielle Green was just 0.15 per cent ahead of Liberal candidate Sam Ozturk.

After preferences, Ms Green was at 52.73 per cent to Mr Ozturk’s 47.27 per cent.

Ms Green’s supporters were in high spirits as they watched the live count at her family home in Doreen.

The 51-year-old said she was feeling incredible humbled to be ahead in the polls.

“What a privilege it is to have represented this community for 12 years and for them to have chosen me again,” she told Star Weekly.

“I want to start work immediately as part of an Andrews government and deliver on what we’ve promised this community.”

The mood at The Cellar Room in South Morang wasn’t quite so joyous as news filtered in about the Liberal party’s defeat.

Liberal member for the Northern Metropolitan Region Craig Ondarchie, Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham and Whittlesea councillor Christine Stow were spotted in the blue T-shirt clad crowd.

Mr Ozturk said it has been a “nail-biter” of an evening but he expected such a close result.

“I’m looking forward to the postal votes being counted next week,” he said. “It’s always good to be optimistic.”

Meanwhile, Thomastown looks set to remain in the hands of Labor’s Bronwyn Halfpenny.

Despite being withdrawn from the race over a week ago, Liberal candidate Nitin Gursahani polled 20.7 per cent of the votes in a as of 10.30pm.

Labor’s Frank McGuire was well ahead of Liberal candidate Evren Onder in Broadmeadows, having 77.68 per cent of votes to Mr Onder’s 22.32 per cent.

Ros Spence looks likely to take over from retiring MP Liz Beattie in the seat of Yuroke. About 54 per cent of voters placed her as their first preference.

In the seat of Mill Park, incumbent Labor MP Lily D’Ambrosia is on track for another four years in office. More than 61 per cent of voters have put a “1” next to her name. At 10.30pm, about 55 per cent of votes had been counted.
