Work has started on the long-awaited extension of Findon Road to Plenty Road in South Morang.
The 650-metre extension, which is part of a bigger road project, will create a new east-west connection from Williamsons Road to Danaher Drive.
It’s part of the planned east-west arterial road that will cross Whittlesea and provide a link between the Hume Freeway in Epping and Plenty Road in South Morang.
It will provide motorists with an alternative to McDonalds Road, which is at capacity.
The $13.6 million project will include traffic lights, more lanes, slip lanes, walking and cycling paths and a new bridge across Findon Creek.
The Danaher Drive to Plenty Road part of the project has already been completed by a developer.
The work comes after council earlier this year completed converting a roundabout at Findon Road and Ferres Boulevard in South Morang into traffic lights.
The busy intersection is used as a gateway to Mill Park and South Morang and was the municipality’s busiest roundabout.
Construction on the Findon Road extension is expected to be complete by early to mid-2021.
