Man charged over improvised explosive device

A man has been charged with weapons offences after an improvised explosive device was found at a property in Craigieburn on Friday.

The Australian Federal Police with the assistance of Victoria Police searched a Bay Meadows Green residence on Friday, where they located the improvised explosive device.

Victoria Police Bomb Response Unit attended to ensure the area was safe.

A 39-year-old Craigieburn man was charged by Victoria Police with possessing an explosive device, two counts of failing to store ammunition correctly, failing to store a handgun correctly, possessing a silencer without a permit, possessing cannabis and possessing prohibited weapons without exemption or approval.

He has been bailed to appear in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on 20 July 2021.

An AFP spokesperson said the operation was part of an ongoing investigation with the activity not related to any current or impending threat to public safety.
