Two new schools in Mickleham and Greenvale have been given official names ahead of opening next year.
The two schools have been going by interim names while under construction.
The school currently known as Merrifield West Primary School in Mickleham, will officially be known as Gaayip-Yagila Primary School.
Gaayip-Yagila, which is pronounced as “Gar-yip Yag-you-lah” is a local Aboriginal word meaning come together.
Cassandra Hoggins has been appointed the school’s first principal.
Gaayip-Yagila had 150 students enrolled for next year as of late August.
The other school, which has been called Greenvale North West Primary School, will officially be called Keelonith Primary School.
Pronounced “Key-lon-eeth”, the school has been named after the local Aboriginal word meaning hear and understand.
Loren Peavey has been announced as the principal of Keelonith Primary School, with Sam Birrell named vice-principal.
The school is a Supported Inclusion School, meaning will have a fully integrated specialist provision that has capacity for 50 students with a disability.
Work on both schools is almost complete.
