Three-time mayor Geoff Porter has decided not to stand at the upcoming Hume council elections.
The Meadow Valley Ward councillor decided in recent weeks not to seek re-election for another four years.
He’s the first current councillor to confirm that they wouldn’t be standing
“I’ve done my time and it’s time for someone else to bring in some new ideas,” Cr Porter said.
“It’s been a great time meeting lots of people and groups and I’ve been able to make a small contribution in bringing things for people here.
“After 16 years, it’s for me to spend some more time with my family. I can’t commit for another four years and I would never pull out after a year or two.”
Cr Porter is the only person to have served as mayor three times in Hume, something that he sees as a great honour.
He said there had been a lot of projects in Hume that he was proud of.
“Hume is in good hands and I leave it a better place than when I started,” he said.
“There’s been a lot of improvements and there’s been great support in the community and I’ve made a lot of friends.
“There’s improvements that the community can take advantage of.
“It’s the right time to hand the baton over, it’s time for someone else.”
Cr Porter, a school teacher, said he had a few things and projects that he would look to focus on.
“It’ll be good to have some time for me again.”
