A Hume councillor is calling for parking changes on two Jacana streets to help traffic flow more smoothly.
Cr Geoff Porter raised the parking issues on Fox Court and Landy Road, Jacana at a recent council meeting, after feedback from residents.
Cr Porter asked for council officers to inspect and report back with potential actions to alleviate traffic and parking problems on those two streets.
All other councillors voted in favour of the motion.
Cr Porter said he had raised the issue before but a new unit development on the corner of Fox Court and Pascoe Vale Road had made the problem even worse.
“Local people have contacted me and aren’t happy about it, it needs to be addressed,” Cr Porter said.
“It’s a bit of an issue and unit development is the biggest problem.”
Cr Porter said the latest unit development made it hard for people to exit Fox Court onto Pascoe Vale Road, with more cars parked on the street.
He said while many locals tried to use the nearby lights, it was becoming harder with the backstreets also having cars parked along them.
“They’ve just finished those units and the local people know that when the builders finish their trucks will be replaced by cars.
“For a car turning onto Pascoe Vale Road, it will be a bit tight. It will be exasperated by the fact that [on] the immediate corner north there is a permit to build more townhouses.”
Intersecting with Fox Court is Landry Road where the Jacana Autism School is located which causes more parking issues when the school is open, Cr Porter said.
He said while the school had added more parking, more needed to be done as surrounding roads become blocked pretty quickly.
“While it’s not too bad now with not as many students at the Jacana Autism School, when that is full swing, it creates major issues for the local people and the people going to work there.”
Cr Porter said he would like to see restrictive parking that is already in the area, extended to Fox Court and expanded on Landry Road.
He said another possible solution could be indented parking.
