Broadmeadows shoppers will lose one of their big department stores early next year.
Last week, Big W announced that its Broadmeadows store, which is located in the Broadmeadows Central Shopping Centre, will be one of three stores to shut their doors on January 31, 2021.
The closure is part of the company’s network review which aims to build a strong and more sustainable store and distribution centre network that reflects customers’ needs
Big W managing director David Walker said the decision to close the stores was difficult.
“Supporting our team remains our priority and we are committed to doing the right thing by them,” he said.
“Over the next five months, we will explore every redeployment opportunity available with team members who choose to continue their career at BIG W or with other Woolworths Group brands.
“We remain committed to building a strong and sustainable BIG W that meets the needs of Australian families.”
In April last year, BIG W announced its intention to close up to 30 stores and two distribution centres over a three year period.
A spokesman from Vicinity Centres, which operates Broadmeadows Central said they would continue to have a strong relationship with the Woolworths group.
“We are well advanced on negotiations with other retailers to fill the space at Broadmeadows Central to better meet the needs of their local communities,” the spokesman said.
“We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with Big W and Woolworths to ensure strong and sustainable outcomes for both our businesses, as we continue to meet changing preferences from our customers.”
