Thirty-nine new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Hume, taking the municipality’s total number of cases past 500.
According to Department of Health and Human Services data, there have been 530 coronavirus cases recorded in Hume, of which 280 remain active.
The municipality’s coronavirus count is the highest in the state, however Wyndham currently has the highest number of active cases (299).
Whittlesea has recorded 198 cases – an increase of 29 cases since yesterday.
There are 109 active cases in the municipality.
It comes as Costco confirmed a positive case at its Epping warehouse.
In a message to staff, Costco said the staff member last worked on July 11.
Across the state, 428 new cases were recorded today – a figure labelled as “disappointing” and “concerning” by Victoria’s chief health officer, Brett Sutton.
“We have not turned the corner here. Worse than that … there will be dozens of individuals who will require hospitalisation from these 428 people,” Professor Sutton said.
“Tragically there will be several who require intensive care support and a number of people will die. So it has to turn around.”
Professor Sutton said harsher restrictions remained a possibility.
“We are all thinking about the additional measure that might be required if it doesn’t turn around.”
