Whittlesea thanks its volunteers

Whittlesea council has paid tribute to its volunteers to mark National Volunteer Week.

The theme of this year’s National volunteer week is ‘Changing Communities, Changing Lives’.

Whittlesea administrator Lydia Wilson said this year’s theme couldn’t be more appropriate.

“This year’s theme is very fitting because our volunteers are really changing lives for so many people in need,” she said.

“We are seeing many examples of care shown to people that need immediate assistance with basic items such as food and clothing delivered through our volunteers.

“The positive impact volunteers have on people’s quality of life is immeasurable and we’re grateful for their kindness and support to those in the community who need it the most.”

The council has 75 volunteers who mostly support elderly residents and people living with a disability.

Among them is Michael Leeson who has been delivering meals and driving the planned activity group bus for five years.

“It’s been a very rewarding experience, and is very personally satisfying,” he said.

“It gives me something to do and I meet nice people. Helping people makes you feel important, it gives you a warm feeling.”

For more information or to register as a volunteer, call the council on 8401 6223.
