Grand final dreams over

The hopes of Lalor Stars pulling off an upset win were ended by a local council not letting the Diamond Valley Cricket Association use its grounds.

While most other cricket competitions across the state decided to call off their finals due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DVCA was planning to go ahead with theirs.

Clubs were told on Friday morning, that day two of the matches would go ahead, with plenty of precautions in place.

Hours later they informed clubs that the matches would now be cancelled with Nillumbik Council not allowing the matches to continue.

As of Friday afternoon the competition had not decided if and which sides premierships would be awarded too.

In many cases, the top side heading into the grand final will be crowned winners.

Lalor Stars were in trouble after day one of the match against minor premiers Banyule in the Money Shield.

The Stars were bowled out for 78, with Banyule 2-50 in reply.

In the Mash Shield, Laurimar looked set for victory against Bundoora Park.

Bundoora Park was bowled out for 103 with Laurimar at 2-26 on stumps on day one.

Bundoora Park is the higher ranked side having claimed the minor premiership.

In the top grade, the Barclay Shield, Heidelberg was on top after day one against Diamond Creek.

Hedielberg made 8-204 from their 80 overs.

If the premiership is awarded to the top side, Diamond Creek will claim the title.
