Roxburgh Park on target to bridge the gap

Roxburgh Park is working hard to bridge the gap between it and the top sides in Essendon District Football League division 1.

Having achieved its aim last season to stay up in division 1 after being promoted, the Magpies are keen to show they have improved.

If early signs are anything to go by, Magpies coach Michael Farrelly thinks it might be the case. “Pre-season numbers are the best they have been in my time in the club,” he said.

“The guys are working extremely hard and are fitter and stronger than last year.

“We’re teaching them a lot of things about footy.

“We’re under no illusions, we’re not going to be a top two or three side, we want to win more games than last year and be more competitive.

“The work ethic can’t be questioned.”

The Magpies have also looked to add some more experience to their squad to help guide their young list.

Farrelly said they needed some players with a bit more experience to help steer the ship on the ground.

He said they would have more depth in both their seniors and reserves.

Matt Coomans has joined the side as a playing assistant coach, with Farrelly saying he was already showing his leadership skills on the training track. Nathan Reichelt and Luke Scarpini are two who have come across from Craigieburn.

Farrelly said having been around a premiership team, which has previously played at a higher level, would add to the side.

Former Northern Saints skipper Daniel Boudoloh is returning to the EDFL, after spending the last couple of years in the Southern Football League.

He will give the Magpies some flexibility. The Magpies are also hopeful that former player Brad Dimech will return to the club.

Mernda has denied his clearances, due to him being contracted.

Farrelly said Dimech wanted to come back to Roxburgh Park where his mates are and play at a higher level of football.

He said they would go to AFL Victoria to appeal Mernda’s decision not to clear him.

The Magpies kick off their season on April 4 against Taylors Lakes.
