Sunbury’s Boardman Reserve could host night games and more training sessions if a Coalition government wins the November 29 election.
Liberal candidate for Sunbury, Jo Hagan, promised $50,000 for upgrades to the oval at a Sunbury Kangaroos Football Netball Club meet and greet on Monday night.
Ms Hagan said the funding would allow the club to upgrade to phase-three power. This would enable the oval’s lights to be used for night games.
The federal government has committed to spending $150,000 on new lights at the oval. However, power restrictions would permit them being used for only training sessions.
Sunbury Kangaroos president Allan Walters said the extra $50,000 would mean the club could make better use of the oval.
“This will allow us to schedule training four nights a week,” he said.
Ms Hagan said the funding would be a boost for local sporting clubs.
“Along with the expanded Boardman Indoor Stadium and growing participation at the nearby athletics track, Boardman Reserve is fast becoming a major hub for a variety of sports in Sunbury,” she said.
Western Metropolitan Region MLC Andrew Elsbury also attended the meet and greet night, which was also the club’s first football training night for the preseason.
