Recycling collections in Whittlesea continue to be sent to landfill as the council searches for a sustainable long-term solution to the recycling crisis.
While Hume’s kerbside recycling collections returned to normal on October 8, with recyclables sent to the former SKM plant at Laverton North, collections from Whittlesea continue to be dumped at the Wollert landfill.
The resumption of recycling services in Hume followed the announcement that waste company Cleanaway had bought SKM for $66 million.
Whittlesea council’s city transport and presentation director, Helen Sui said the council was working with the state and federal governments and other councils to find a long-term solution.
“While we cannot go into detail at this stage, we are currently exploring a variety of options and hope to have a solution very soon,” she said.
“We will let our residents know the way forward as soon as we are able to.
“In the meantime, we continue to collect recycling from the kerbside and have provided a variety of recycling skips at the Wollert landfill for those who want to take extra steps to sort and deliver their own recycling.”
Hume mayor Carly Moore said the council would continue to offer a pop-up recycling station.
“Even though kerbside recycling processing has resumed, the pop-up recycling station is a great opportunity to learn more about the do’s and don’ts of recycling,” Cr Moore said.
