NMCA: Players kick goals for White Ribbon campaign

Players from across the North Metro Cricket Association joined forces on Monday to raise awareness and funds for the White Ribbon campaign.

A senior and junior match were played with players from across the association, who had been nominated by their clubs.

The senior match involved one representative from each of the senior clubs, with the players nominated epitomising the very best things about the cricket community and culture.

Before the matches, the teams had a minute’s silence to honour the memory of Phillip Hughes who died after being hit by a bouncer in November.

The senior teams, the Emus and Kangaroos, were led by Rivergum’s A-grade premiership captain Gary Bell and Keon Park premiership player Ryan Docherty.

The Emus won the senior match, making 6-198. Kangaroos could make only 98.

Darebin Chargers’ Vik Dhingra was named man of the match for scoring 26, taking 3-7 and taking two catches for the Emus.

The junior side involved cricketers from across the under-14s, under-16s and under-18 programs.

Keon Park’s Aftab Merchant and Dennis’s James Sparrow skippered the sides.

The Kangaroos won a nail biter in the junior match after making 130.

Three wickets in the last two overs sealed the match, with the Emus falling four runs short of victory.

Kuldeep Patel from Preston Baseballers was named man of the match.

Event co-ordinator Lenore Smith said more than $1000 was raised from the day.

“It is a testament to the culture of the association that so many people volunteered their time on the day to assist in the organisation, umpiring, scoring, playing and general running of the event.

“Most importantly, the NMCA continued to spread the message of White Ribbon and increase the awareness of this wonderful cause among its members and the wider community.’’
