Driving on Plenty Road, which has a reputation as one of the worst roads in Whittlesea, is about to become easier.
Stage one of the $178.6 million Plenty Road upgrade is almost complete, with three lanes now open in both directions between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard.
Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio said the new lanes would improve traffic flow for the 52,000 motorists who travel the 5.6 kilometres between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard daily.
The road is being upgraded from four to six lanes.
“The first stage of the Plenty Road upgrade is almost complete and will provide a safer and more efficient journey for Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern suburbs,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.
“I’m so pleased we could complete this much-needed upgrade while also building a better environment for the community to enjoy.”
New traffic and pedestrian lights have been turned on along the 5.6-kilometre stretch, while new street lights have also been added along Plenty Road.
Intersection upgrades will soon be completed at McKimmies, Child and Centenary roads and Bush Boulevard.
On-road cycling lanes have opened, allowing cyclists to travel on a dedicated path away from traffic.
Stage two of the upgrade, between Bush Boulevard and Bridge Inn Road, will start later this year.
