Parts of the Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre will be closed for up to six months while the centre is upgraded.
The Tanderrum Way centre opened almost 40 years ago and is a popular place for locals to exercise and socialise.
Hume council said the oldest parts of the centre needed to be upgraded to ensure the Broadmeadows community could continue using the centre for years to come.
Mayor Carly Moore said the work would cost $2.49 million and would take place until late September.
The 25-metre pool and attached changerooms will be closed during the renovations, while there will also be reduced space in the gym.
As a result, some swimming lessons will be suspended, with parents notified of the suspensions last month.
“This will cause some inconvenience and we appreciate your patience while we make upgrades to the oldest part of the centre,” Cr Moore said.
“The majority of the centre will remain open during the works, including the 50-metre pool and attached changerooms, group fitness rooms, stadium, centre entry and parts of the gym.
The work will include repairs to the 25-metre pool hall roof, changeroom upgrades, a new steam room, new on-deck showers, removal of the mezzanine balcony and resurfacing of the pool concourse.
The centre’s energy efficiency will be improved, with north-facing windows to be double glazed and tinted and pool plant equipment updated.
