Mernda’s new library may be tiny, but the idea behind it definitely isn’t.
The Mernda Primary School student representative council has created the Mernda Tiny Library at the Mernda Village Community Activity Centre to encourage pre-school children to develop a love of books.
The library was designed by the pupils and built by the Whittlesea Men’s Shed.
The tiny library was inspired by the school’s community story time program, which is run by the student representative council once a fortnight in the school library.
The story time is part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Mernda 1000 Voices project, in which community members are encouraged to act on their aspirations for the community.
Councillor Kris Pavlidis said the library was based on the principles of building community, sparking creativity and inspiring young readers.
“What a proud moment to see our youth sharing their love of reading with pre-school children and also helping people connect and belong.
“A wonderful example of community development,” she said.
