A Dallas man has been charged over the alleged theft of a car from an Epping shopping centre carpark last week.

Police allege a white Mercedes sedan was stolen from the Cooper Street carpark just before 9pm on Thursday, August 2.

The victim had gone to return a trolley when the man allegedly got in the car and drove away.

The victim gave chase on foot and tried to open a door of the car in an attempt to stop the man, but she was unsuccessful.

She sustained minor injuries to her hand.

The Dallas man, 20, was taken to a local police station by his mother and brother-in-law after footage of the incident was shared on a number of social media sites.

He has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, unlawful assault, theft, obtaining property by deception, committing indictable offences while on bail and drug-related offences.

He has been remanded to face Heidelberg magistrates court today.
