Gabrielle Newton has taken home the Northern Knights’ Girl’s TAC Cup best and fairest award.

Newton, who is in her second year at the Knights, was named the winner at the side’s awards night last week.

Newton claimed the award with 79 votes, seven votes ahead Ellie McKenzie, who finished on 72 votes.

Sarah Sansonetti rounded out the top three finishing on 62 votes.

Speaking before the season, Knights coach Marcus Abney-Hastings said Newton was one of the players to watch this season.

“Gabby Newton is a middle-age prospect who is also a good basketballer,” he said at the time. “She’ll be an AFL prospect in the future.”

Newton was also named the Knights best in their grand final loss to the Geelong Falcons.

Newton is one of five Knights’ players who will be part of the second part of the AFL Women’s under-18 National Championships starting next week.

She’s joined in the squad by Sansonetti, Marnie Jarvis, Maddy Brancatisano and Britney Gutknecht.
