Doreen: Cannabis plants seized from Bernard Street house

Cannabis plants estimated at $300,000 were uncovered on Monday when police raided a house in Doreen.

Despite a well-kept front garden with a freshly mown lawn, the house in Bernard Street was a ‘‘front for a sophisticated hydroponic hot house used to illegally grow cannabis,’’ police said.

An anonymous tip-off to Crime Stoppers alerted police to the crop house.

Mill Park Sergeant Danny Taylor said about 340 plants were found growing in all seven rooms of the house.

He said police were still making inquiries to find out whether the house was being tenanted. There was no furniture or food inside.

Police also seized a substantial amount of “hydroponic hardware” including lighting.

‘‘It was a sophisticated set-up,”  Sergeant Taylor said.

The power had been tripped, posing a danger to neighbouring houses.

“Anytime you have electricity bypassed there’s always the likelihood of a fire,” Sergeant Taylor said.
