Thomastown do it easy

Thomastown did what it needed to as it easily account for Watsonia in Northern Football League division 2 on Saturday.

The Bears had no trouble against for the win less Saints, winning all four quarters in the 21.22 (148)-7.11 (53) result.

Bears’ president Rob Mazniovski  said it was a good four quarter performance.

“Everyone played well and there was no standouts with everyone contributing,” he said.

“We did what we needed to. These are the games we need to win and try and win by big margins.”

Matthew Ferraro, Anthony Capeci, Rodney Carruthers and Salvatore Mamone kicked three goals each for the Bears.

Joshua Beare and Matthew Dirkx were named the best.

The win moved the Bears into the top four, percentage clear of Banyule, with Epping a game further back.

Mazniovski said the key for the Bears was to focus on consistency, not only week in, week out, but also in games.

He said they were about where they thought they would on the ladder at this time of the season.

“We felt like we dropped a game or two earlier in the year that we shouldn’t have,” he said. “We can’t afford to drop any more of those games.

“With the training we’ve done and the players we’ve picked up, we’d be disappointed not to make finals

“When we play our best football we are as good as anyone. We just have to play four solid quarters.

“Against Eltham we let them get a run on and we can’t do that against the better sides.”

Mazniovski said they were hoping to have their full side back in about a month’s time. He said the players stepping up, had more than done the job asked of them.

The Bears this week face Epping, which is coming off it’s third win of the season.

The Pingers have surprised everyone this year, having been promoted on the eve of the season.

On Saturday, they defeated Fitzroy Stars, 20.21 (141)-9.8 (62).

Mazniovski said they can’t underestimate the Pingers.

“They’ve surprised everyone and you can’t take them lightly,” he said.

“We’ve got a tough month ahead.”

In division 1, Bundoora returned to the winners list,, beating Whittlesea.

The Bulls showed some of the form that had been missing this year, in the 24.18 (162)-14.5 (89) win

Gary Moorcroft kicked four goals for the winners.

In division 3, Mernda defeated Kilmore and Laurimar upset South Morang.
