Wallan end Rupertswood streak

Wallan ended Rupertswood’s reign in the Riddell District Football League under-18.5 competition on Sunday.

The Sharks entered Sunday’s grand final looking for their fourth straight flag, but weren’t red hot favourites like they had been in previous seasons.

While the Sharks had taken the win between the two sides in the qualifying final, the Magpies finished on top of the ladder and inflicted a rare defeat on the Sharks during the season.

It was an even contest in the first quarter, with the Magpies taking the early advantage kicking two goals to one in the first quarter.

The Magpies blew the game apart in the second quarter, kicking five goals to none to be sitting pretty at half time.

Despite stepping up their game a level in the third quarter, the Sharks made little inroads and they still trailed by 26 points heading into the last break.

The Magpies made sure there wasn’t going to be a Sharks comeback, kicking the first goal of the last quarter in the opening minute.

They added another four last quarter goals, while keeping the Sharks goal less, to seal the premiership, 14.14 (98)-5.11 (41).

Patrick Mahoney was awarded the best on ground medal, while Jake Hall, who kicked four goals, won the Victorian Country Football League Medal.

For the Sharks, Patrick Scanlon who kicked four goals, was named their best.
