Police investigating brawl at South Morang Football Club after grand final loss

Police are investigating a brawl at the South Morang Football Club on Saturday night following the club’s Northern Football League division three grand final loss to Banyule.

Police were called to the club’s The Lakes Boulevard base just before 10pm.

The brawl had finished by the time police arrived, but a number of people were spoken to by a police.

A 20-year-old man later turned up at a medical centre with head injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Club secretary Tamara Howlett declined to comment when contacted by Star Weekly.

In a post on the club’s Facebook page on Sunday, Ms Howlett urged players and supporters to refrain from commenting in the media.

“It’s already bad enough that this has occurred, but sharing dirty laundry is certainly not the way to go,” she wrote.

“All the junior, senior and netty [sic] players have had successful seasons and if all are true to their word about wanting what’s best for the club, let them celebrate … without unnecessary attention and drama. It is about the players of the club and no one else.”

Supporters also took to Facebook on Sunday to express their disgust at what happened.

Anyone with information about the brawl can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
