VicRoads reviewing safety of Whittlesea’s roads

Whittlesea residents are being encouraged to have their say on the safety of six of the area’s key arterial roads.

The safety of the six roads is being reviewed by VicRoads as part of the Towards Zero strategy, which aims to reduce road deaths in Victoria to 200 a year or below by 2020.

The roads under review are: Plenty Road between Masons, Mernda and Grants roads; Bridge Inn Road between Epping and Yan Yean roads; Edgars Road between Mahoneys Road and Cooper Street; Childs Road between Plenty and Dalton roads; Donnybrook Road between the Melbourne-Sydney rail line and Epping Road; and Merriang Road between Wollert CFA and Grants Road.

The six roads have been the site of 117 crashes in the past five years, including five fatalities – two of which were on Edgars Road.

To help with the review, VicRoads has launched an online survey.

North-west metro regional director Vince Punaro said Whittlesea’s population was expected to grow beyond 300,000 by 2031, making it important to balance safety and mobility on the arterial road network.

“Whittlesea’s population is growing at such a rapid rate which means the city’s roads are under increasing pressure,” he said.

The survey is available until Sunday, July 30.
