Ballarat Football League

Six goals from Brendan Fevola wasn’t enough for Melton South to get the win against Lake Wendouree on Saturday, going down by 34 points and slipping out of the Ballarat Football League top six. South was able to match the home side in the first half, and even held the lead at half-time, but fell away badly in the third as the Lakers booted seven goals to two to break the game open. Aside from Fevola, just two other South players kicked majors, while the Lakers had seven players hit the scoreboard in the 16.11 (107) – 10.13 (73) result. Melton South slipped to seventh on percentage behind local rivals Melton, and will look to bounce back against Sunbury this week.

In other games, Bacchus Marsh scored a resounding win over Ballarat while Darley went down to Redan after a poor second half. Bacchus Marsh had to work hard to gain the ascendency in its clash, going goal for goal with Ballarat in the first half before starting to stretch away after the long break. They blew the margin away in the final quarter with seven goals to one to claim a 18.19 (127) – 10.6 (66) win and hold onto second place on the ladder. Darley kept pace with Redan for the first half but failed to score in the third term, allowing Redan to steadily pull away before finishing in front, 15.5 (95) – 8.8 (56). It was only the second loss of the season for Darley and saw it slip to third on the ladder.

Bacchus Marsh struggled to keep up with Ballarat in BFNL action on Saturday, eventually going down by 13 goals. While Susan Watson scored 31 goals at an impressive 87 per cent, Ballarat had too much firepower and eventually prevailed 54-41.

Melton South was also outclassed in its clash with Lake Wendouree, giving up a nine-goal lead in the first quarter before going down 58-44. Rebecca Colwell shot well all day to bag 36 goals from just 39 shots, but the Lakers created more opportunities and took the points. In other matches, Melton was thrashed by East Point (61-24), while Darley struggled to hit the scoreboard regularly as Redan took the win in its match, 45-19.
