Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire believes the suburb can become a “postcode of hope” after the state government appointed a board to guide Broadmeadows’ revitalisation.
Led by Mr McGuire, the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Board will advise the government on opportunities and projects to capitalise on the suburb’s strengths and attract investment.
The community-backed board will ensure residents have a say in the future of Broadmeadows, with the $14.3 million Broadmeadows Revitalisation Project and the Greater Broadmeadows Framework Plan under way.
As part of the revitalisation project, the government and Hume council are spending $23 million to redevelop the Broadmeadows Town Hall into a community and business hub.
The government has also committed $4 million to improve Broadmeadows train station and $2.15 million for planning and construction of the Meadowlink Shared Trail.
The Greater Broadmeadows Framework Plan will guide the suburb’s redevelopment over the next three decades.
Mr McGuire said the plan, the revitalisation project and the new board would help Broadmeadows become the capital of Melbourne’s north.
He said the government’s investment showed residents that Broadmeadows mattered.
“It is real recognition for the community, its vision, plans and advocacy, and an opportunity to drive change,” he said.
“This initiative will help postcodes of disadvantage to again become postcodes of hope by creating opportunities to build smarter, healthier, better connected and sustainable communities.”
Mayor Drew Jessop said the council wanted to see Broadmeadows transformed into a thriving, commercial, industrial and residential hub, making it a “powerhouse”.
“Broadmeadows has exceptional potential to become a vibrant town centre,” he said.
“Our plans for the Broadmeadows town centre … will be key drivers in setting the direction for the continued renewal and growth of Broadmeadows and surrounds.”
The announcement of the board comes as the state government vowed to provide the council with $1 million over three years to tackle soaring unemployment in Broadmeadows.
