It was a case of deja vu for Greenvale Kangaroos as they tasted victory then an agonising defeat within the space of 24 hours in Victoria Premier Cricket.
The Kangaroos completed the job on Saturday, taking home the points on day two of their match against Frankston Peninsula.
The game was the Kangaroos’ to lose after controlling day one.
They resumed at 2-71, needing another 92 for victory. And it wasn’t a good start on day two with Harry Dearden failing to add to his day-one score of 33.
There was a constant fall of wickets for the Kangaroos, but they managed to get first innings points with three wickets in hand.
Michael Rosendale and Kyle Adams put on 74 for the eighth wicket to push the score past 220.
Rosendale continued to push on with the tail and was eventually the last man out for 84, with the Kangaroos at 268.
Frankston Peninsula was 1-44 in its second innings when stumps were called.
The Kangaroos then turned their attention to the one-day format on Sunday against Essendon. This time, they lost by one run.
Former state representative Michael Hill was the key to Essendon’s tally of 194, making 85 before being run out. Trent Waring was the best of the bowlers, with 3-46.
In reply, the Kangaroos looked to have the game in control at 3-159, but the wicket of Nathan Massey, who had looked good on his way to 87, launched a late-order collapse.
In the end it got down to the final over of the day, with the Kangaroos needing nine runs off six balls with two wickets in hand.
They managed six runs off the first five balls of the over to set the equation of three from one ball, with Kyle Adams facing.
A wide, meant an extra delivery and one less needed off the last ball.
Adams went for it but was bowled, leaving the Kangaroos to rue a one-run loss.
Zaheer Hussain was the only other batsman to get going for the Kangaroos, making 45.
It’s the second close game they’ve lost this season and they’re now 10th on the ladder after six rounds.
