Bowlers must have thought it was the middle of winter – not bowls season – on Saturday.
Many games were called off as heavy wind and rain made play impossible.
Among those to get on the greens was Broadmeadows Bowls Club in division 2, section 2, with the decision to brave the cold conditions paying off in a 86 (15)-61 (3) win over Moonee Ponds.
Sitting second bottom after the first two rounds, Broadmeadows jumped to third after weekend’s results as just three of the five matches in the section went ahead.
Broadmeadows president Tony Davis said it was a good win overall.
“We were on and off all day,” he said. “It was like winter, it was so wet and cold.
“The win was never in doubt, with Moonee Ponds a team that has struggled the last few years.
“It’s games like this you always worry about and really need to win.”
Davis said finals were the aim after just missing out on them last year. He said the club would love to earn promotion for the first time.
“Since I’ve been at the club, we’ve moved from division 4 to division 2,” he said. “Like any club, we’re trying to get as high as possible. For a club of our size, making division 1 would be massive.”
Broadmeadows’ second side didn’t get on the green, the weather forcing the cancellation of its match with Gladstone Park (2).
The club’s third side had to forfeit due to a lack of numbers on Saturday.
Davis said they were always looking for new players, particularly those of the younger variety, to join the club.
“We still got a few players out and a couple of players who were away this week,” he said.
“Always makes it hard – when players from the firsts or seconds are missing, players have to move up to fill holes.
Broadmeadows top side faces Glenroy at Glenroy this week.
