For the past 10 years, Lindsay Mann has been researching the history of the Yan Yean cemetery and the people buried there.
Next week, the local historian will share his work with the community during a one-hour talk at Whittlesea library.
Mr Mann began researching and writing a book about the cemetery, outside Whittlesea township, at the request of the Yan Yean cemetery Trust.
He said the cemetery started as a casual burial ground in 1854 and was formalised in 1855.
The cemetery is still in use.
“There are a whole heap of things that are interesting about it- from its reason for being there to the pioneers and early settlers [buried] there and their stories,” Mr Mann said.
“The earliest official grave from 1855 is that of William Johnstone, who was the father of one of the trustees.
“Moses Thomas’ is the largest grave-he owned a farm at Mernda.”
Mr Mann hopes his talk, part of Yarra Plenty Regional Library’s local history month, will inspire others to learn about the local area.
